MOSAIC : Mastering job-Oriented Skills in Arts & crafts thanks to Inclusive Centres of vocational excellence

Historically, Europe has been a continent where economies based on local craftsmanship have thrived. In modern times, we have seen the growth of big companies that have taken large shares of the market in different sectors. However, there is still a plethora of micro and small or medium enterprises that are keeping alive the traditions and culture behind their crafts. We are talking about enterprises that are often composed of one employee, and are specialised in niche markets, high-end products or luxury, thanks to a level of quality renowned all over the world. These crafts give young people a wonderful chance of employment, if they are informed of their existence and adequately trained.

However, the potential of the arts and crafts sectors is hindered by some obstacles. The training courses provided by VET centres are at risk of lagging behind the new changes in production technology and marketing. Young people studying to become craftsmen lack a deep understanding of administration and finance, including the management of cash flows and the access to credit, to become self-entrepreneurs. There is also a need to raise the attractiveness of Arts & Crafts by contrasting stereotypes among young people. Finally, even though these sectors are strongly focused on hand made processes, the use of technology can support craftsmen in many ways; therefore, digitalisation techniques and digital skills need to be more integrated in the training courses.

Collaboration between companies, VET centres and higher education institutions is crucial to reach a state of mutual fertilisation and overcome the challenges linked to digital, environmental and socio-economic evolutions.
